Joshua Chapters 1–5
🎬 Part 1: A New Leader – Joshua (Joshua 1)
After the death of Moses, God appointed Joshua to lead the Israelites into the Promised Land.
Though Joshua had served under Moses for many years, leading the entire nation was a completely new and weighty responsibility.
God spoke directly to Joshua:
📖 “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel.” (Joshua 1:2, ESV)
God encourages him again and again:
📖 “Be strong and courageous, for you shall cause this people to inherit the land that I swore to their fathers to give them.” (Joshua 1:6)
But strength alone was not enough. Obedience to God's word was the foundation.
📖 “This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night… For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success.” (Joshua 1:8)
Joshua responded in faith and obedience.
He prepared the people for the journey ahead — toward the land God had promised.
🎬 Part 2: Rahab and the Spies (Joshua 2)
Before crossing the Jordan River, Joshua sent two spies to scout out Jericho, the first stronghold in Canaan.
There, they met a surprising ally — Rahab, a prostitute who lived within the walls of Jericho.
Though a Canaanite, Rahab had heard of the mighty acts of God and believed in His power:
📖 “The LORD your God, He is God in the heavens above and on the earth beneath.” (Joshua 2:11)
Rahab hid the spies from the authorities and asked for protection for her family.
📖 “Now then, please swear to me by the LORD that… you will save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all who belong to them.” (Joshua 2:12–13)
The spies agreed. They instructed her to hang a scarlet cord from her window as a sign.
That red cord would mark her household as spared on the day of destruction.
Rahab’s faith saved her — and she would later be remembered in the genealogy of Jesus Christ (Matthew 1:5) as a woman of remarkable belief.
🎬 Part 3: Crossing the Jordan (Joshua 3–5)
1)Chapter 3 – The Miraculous Crossing
The Israelites approached the Jordan River at flood stage.
Yet God commanded the priests to carry the Ark of the Covenant and step into the waters.
📖 “And when the soles of the feet of the priests bearing the ark… shall rest in the waters of the Jordan, the waters… shall stand in one heap.” (Joshua 3:13)
As they obeyed, the waters stopped flowing.
The people walked across on dry ground, just as their ancestors had crossed the Red Sea.
It was a powerful sign: God was with them, just as He had been with Moses.
2)Chapter 4 – The Memorial Stones
After the crossing, God instructed the people to take twelve stones, one for each tribe, from the riverbed.
They were set up at Gilgal as a memorial.
📖 “When your children ask in time to come, ‘What do those stones mean to you?’… then you shall let your children know, ‘Israel passed over this Jordan on dry ground.’” (Joshua 4:6–7)
The stones were a testimony — not only of God’s power, but also of the importance of remembering and teaching future generations what God had done.
3)Chapter 5 – Covenant Renewal
Before entering battle, the Lord commanded Joshua to circumcise the new generation — those born in the wilderness who had not yet received the covenant sign.
📖 “Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you.” (Joshua 5:9)
This was a spiritual preparation, a renewal of their identity as God’s covenant people.
They also celebrated the Passover, for the first time in the Promised Land.
📖 “And the manna ceased… and they ate of the produce of the land of Canaan that year.” (Joshua 5:12)
The old provisions ended — and a new season began.
God was now providing through the land He had given them.

Joshua’s leadership began with God’s promise and presence.

Rahab’s story shows that faith, not background, brings salvation.

The Jordan crossing and memorial stones remind us that God makes a way, and we must remember His deeds.

And through circumcision and Passover, we learn that obedience and covenant renewal come before conquest.
1. 새로운 지도자 여호수아 (여호수아 1장)
모세가 죽은 후, 하나님은 그의 뒤를 이을 새 지도자로 여호수아를 세우셨습니다.
여호수아는 오랜 세월 모세를 섬기며 훈련받았지만, 지도자가 된다는 것은 전혀 다른 책임이었습니다.
그에게 주어진 첫 번째 말씀은 분명했습니다.
여호수아 1:2 내 종 모세가 죽었으니... 너는 이 모든 백성과 더불어 일어나 이 요단을 건너 내가 그들 곧 이스라엘 자손에게 주는 땅으로 가라.
여호수아 1:6 강하고 담대하라. 너는 내가 그들의 조상에게 맹세하여 그들에게 주리라 한 땅을 이 백성에게 차지하게 하리라.
하나님은 여호수아에게 반복해서 당부하십니다. 그리고 또다시, 말씀에 순종할 것을 강조하십니다.
여호수아 1:8 이 율법책을 네 입에서 떠나지 말게 하며 주야로 그것을 묵상하여... 그 가운데 기록한 대로 다 지켜 행하라.
하나님은 단지 리더십을 맡기신 것이 아니라, 말씀에 순종하며 백성을 이끌라는 분명한 사명을 주신 것입니다.
2. 라합과 여리고 정탐꾼들 (여호수아 2장)
요단강을 건너기 전, 여호수아는 여리고성을 정탐하기 위해 두 명의 정탐꾼을 보냅니다.
그들은 여리고 성의 기생, 라합의 집에 들어갑니다.
위험한 순간이었지만, 라합은 놀라운 믿음으로 그들을 숨겨주고 이렇게 말합니다.
여호수아 2:1 너희의 하나님 여호와는 위로는 하늘에서도, 아래로는 땅에서도 하나님이시니라.
그녀는 하나님께서 이스라엘을 위해 큰 일을 행하신 것을 듣고 믿음으로 반응했습니다.
그리고 자신과 가족을 살려달라고 요청하죠.
여호수아 2:13 이제 청하노니... 나의 아버지와 어머니와 형제들과 자매들과 무릇 그들에게 속한 모든 사람을 살려 우리 목숨을 죽음에서 건져 내라.
정탐꾼들은 라합과 약속하며 붉은 줄을 창문에 매달 것을 요청합니다.
그 줄은 구원의 표, 그리고 하나님의 긍휼의 상징이 되었습니다.
라합은 이방인이었지만, 믿음으로 구원받았고 훗날 예수 그리스도의 족보에도 이름을 남깁니다.
3. 요단강을 건너다 (여호수아 3~5장)
1) 요단강 도하 (3장)
드디어 이스라엘 백성은 요단강 앞에 섭니다.
그러나 문제는, 지금이 추수 시기였다는 것입니다.
요단강은 범람 중이었고, 흐름은 강했습니다.
하지만 하나님께서 명령하십니다.
언약궤를 멘 제사장들이 요단강에 발을 딛자,
여호수아 3:16 곧 물이 그쳐서 위에서 흘러 내리던 물이... 한 곳에 쌓이고, 백성은 여리고 앞 마른 땅으로 건너갔더라.
홍해를 가르셨던 그 하나님께서,
이제는 요단강을 마르게 하셔서 가나안 입성의 문을 여신 것입니다.
2) 열두 돌 기념비 (4장)
하나님은 각 지파에서 하나씩 돌을 취하게 하셔서,
강을 건넌 곳 길갈에 기념비를 세우게 하십니다.
여호수아 3:16 이것이 너희 중에 기념이 되리라. 후일에 너희 자녀가 그 아버지에게 묻기를 ‘이 돌들은 무슨 뜻이냐?’ 하거든...
하나님은 그들의 구원의 여정을 기억하고 전하게 하셨습니다.
과거를 잊지 않는 것이, 믿음을 지키는 중요한 열쇠이기 때문입니다.
3) 언약의 갱신 – 할례와 유월절 (5장)
광야에서 태어난 세대는 아직 할례를 받지 못한 상태였습니다.
하나님은 길갈에서 이들에게 할례를 행하게 하셨습니다.
여호수아 3:16 내가 오늘 애굽의 수치를 너희에게서 떠나가게 하였느니라.
그리고 그들은 가나안 땅에서 첫 유월절을 지킵니다.
그 후, 40년간 먹던 만나도 멈추고 가나안의 소산을 먹게 됩니다.
여호수아 5:12 그 땅의 소산을 먹은 다음 날에 만나가 그쳤으니...”
이 모든 사건은 새로운 시대, 새로운 삶, 새로운 순종을 의미합니다.
하나님의 백성으로서, 언약을 새롭게 하고 삶의 중심을 하나님께 두는 시작이었습니다.
